Daily Comics Digression #22 Who Has the Best Romance in Comics?

So in the spirit of the holiday, let's talk about which superhero couples are the best!

Best Couples

1. Spider-Man and Mary Jane.

This one is fairly traditional, and that's what makes it a good coupling. Over time, Mary Jane grew from being the girl-next-door to Peter Parker's bedrock. At first, she seemed kinda shallow, but she really put that aside when Peter was mourning over Gwen Stacy. Their marriage was so iconic to the development of the superhero in that it really marked the coming of age for Peter, becoming the means for Spider-Man to become a real man. It's a shame that Joe Quesada literally had the devil steal their marriage.

2. Superman and Lois Lane

This one is another traditional relationship that's so ingrained into the comics that it feels like destiny. Even though writers have tried to pair Superman with other superheroes like Wonder Woman, he always seems to somehow end back up with the feisty journalist who is such a foil to him. In the workplace, she is a superwoman, going above and beyond what normal people would do to  pursue a story. Although she has no powers, her spirit is more than a match for Clark.

3. Batman and Catwoman

This one's great because it's a unique paring of superhero and femme fatale. Catwoman is a criminal, but not a violent one, and her dance with Batman takes the concept of "cat and mouse" to a whole new level. There's always some interesting undercurrents when these two get together, not the least of which is how much they will rub off on each other. Their differences in background, moral code, and style make them a really charged couple.

4. Scarlet Witch and Vision

For those of you who enjoy Pinocchio stories or maybe just really love robots, here's a pairing that defies all bounds of love as we currently know them. Vision, the machine that becomes a real man and falls in love with a woman who has realllllllly serious father issues (her dad is Magneto). Their story is notable because it demonstrates that love can conquer any obstacle or difference between people if it's strong enough.

5. Wolverine and Jean Grey

This one almost feels like a fan pairing, considering that Jean Grey is supposed to be married to fellow X-Man Cyclops. But there always seemed to be a kind of forbidden attraction between Wolverine, the man with a beast inside him, and the only woman with enough inner fire to tame his savagery. Plus, her psychic powers make her one heck of a shrink. Her passion combined with her empathy are the perfect match for his brooding attitude and dark past.

Worst Couple

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch

So this one's pretty bad. In an alternate universe, Quicksilver and his sister's close relationship was made a lot...closer. Like Game of Thrones. Need I say more? I probably shouldn't...
