Daily Comics Digression #23: Wizard World and Sony is a Match Made in a Fire

Anyone who has been a fan of comics for years has heard of Wizard Magazine. Once a proud publication for fans of the comic book industry, Wizard was one of the many casualties of the digital era. Wizard ultimately re-branded itself as a convention company for comic book fan culture.

They have recently announced a partnership with Sony pictures to "Discover, Develop, And Incubate New IP." This partnership looks like it is meant for Wizard World to help Sony find new properties to market. As far as the press release goes, it appears that Wizard World is going to try and act like a talent scout at conventions. On the surface, any normal person would probably think this is a good thing. Any normal person hasn't met internet.

Because the internet is a hateful, horrible place, people are interpreting this move suspiciously, even angrily. How dare a convention company work with a million dollar film company to find undiscovered comic book creators and offer them loads of money? It's unconscionable!

This is why I believe that artists tend not to be good at business decisions and therefore need solid business professionals to help them. Art comes from the heart, and artistic types are notorious for thinking with their feelings. Just the very idea of companies trying to make a profit is enough to get certain artistes all ruffled under the collar. Said artistes may then try to beg their audiences for money once they realize they can't feed themselves on good feelings. Or they burn everything and become weird hermits.

Fans of comics should be encouraging arrangements like this one. We need more creators discovered and made rich.
